Abstract

India has a very large number of rivers and a coastline of more than 5700 km. India is subjected to south west and north east monsoon which normally brings copious rain. The rivers generally originate in HIMALYA MOUNTAINS and other mountains. Most of the the rivers are meandering in nature. Hence the long coast line and very large number of rivers make the protection against flooding, embankment breach and storm surge a major issue year after year. Conventional methods are attempted every year to prevent the damages and with the advent of knowledge of geosynthetics various attempts have been made in the country with success of various levels. This paper briefly attempts to capture the understanding, the success and improvements needed and a status as on this juncture.
