Abstract

Over the years in Railway sector, demand for traffic and speed has increased. To meet these demands, it is preferable to adopt advanced engineering materials over conventional materials for their ability to take impacts, settlements and deformations in a better way than rigid structures. Apart from technical advantages, these solutions have number of commercial and operational advantages like, speed and ease of construction, less maintenance and easy rectification etc. These types of solutions perform in a balanced way with ecosystem and blend with environment, thereby inherently increasing the life of structure.

Geosynthetics is one among the advanced engineering materials. Different types of geosynthetics which are used in railways are Geotextiles, Geogrids, Geonets, Geomembrane and Geocomposites etc.

This paper briefly mentions about typical problems in railways, different applications of geosynthetics in railway construction. In support of this two case references are presented along with the site specific problems and proposed solutions.
