Numerical Study on the BenefIts of Geosynthetic Reinforcement for a Typical Indian Railway Track Chawla Sowmiya*, Shahu J.T.** *Department of Civil Engineering, Indian School of Mines Dhanbad **Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi Online published on 13 February, 2018. Abstract Railways play a vital role for sustaining a healthy economy and developing the transportation infrastructure of a country. Now a day's emphasis has been placed on laying new tracks and spreading the railway network efficiently. In recent years, the use of geosynthetics in civil engineering has advanced rapidly to improve the support structure of the track, for cost effective maintenance and low operational cost. For support structure of the track, in railroad construction, geosynthetics shall be installed within or beneath the ballast or subballast layers. In the present study, three dimensional finite element analyses of geosynthetic reinforced railway track sections have been carried out using ABAQUS 6.11 software and the results have been compared with that of unreinforced section in terms of induced stresses and displacements in the track structure. The results show that for improving the performance of railway tracks on clayey subgrade the geosynthetic reinforcement can be effectively used. Top |
