Impact of production of banana through group farming on farmers economy in Konkan region

Summary

The present study was undertaken on a group farm for banana cultivation. The data on all the productions aspects pertained to three years period (2007–08 to 2009–10). The per hectare total cost of cultivation for banana main crop, ratoon I and ratoon II was worked to 20, 71, 88, 1, 51, 469 and 1, 37, 381 with proportion of variable cost to the extent of 52.96 per cent 28.10 per cent and 25.66 per cent respectively. The analysis of return structure estimated the benefit-cost ratio for main crop was 1.66, for Ratoon-I it was 2.72 and for Ratoon-II 2.71 indicating high profitability of this enterprise. This also exhibited efficient use of available resources. The actual production of banana was more than two times in main crop and more than three times in both the ratoons compared to BEP level for banana. The margin of safety was less than 50 per cent in all three seasonal crops of banana indicating good shock absorbing capacity in the event of price fluctuation. Regarding income and employment generation, the per family gross income received was 2, 97, 018 and 1, 64, 634 as net income from group farming. The per family total employment generation was 478 human days which came to 159 human days employment per year. The actual production is much more higher than BEP production in banana cultivation.
