Abstract

The present study on betel vine cultivation was carried out in Hyderabad-Karnataka region, Primary data were collected from the Koppal and Ballari districts during 2017–18. The study assessed the marketing cost, marketing channels and efficiency in betel vine cultivation. The results indicated that, the Kariyele farmers incurred higher marketing cost (Rs. 209.15/pendi) than Ambadiyele farmers (Rs. 196.02/pendi) which was mainly due to packing material cost. In Ambadiyele, The efficiency of channel I was high 20.02 mainly due to involvement of less number of intermediaries as compared to channel II and III was 12.59 and 12.08. Whereas, in Kariyele, the efficiency of channel I was high 28.79 mainly due to involvement of less number of intermediaries as compared to channel II and III was 22.18 and 21.07 respectively. The major problems faced by the farmers are violent price fluctuations and non existence of well developed marketing system and provision of adequate credit would help in expanding area and also increasing productivity of betel leaves, besides strengthening marketing system.
