Abstract

Studies on various factors affecting mortality in crossbreds revealed least mortality in adults and the highest mortality in the age group of birth to 3 months (females) and in the age group of birth to 6 months (males). Two breed crosses have better adaptability than three breed crosses. Mortality was higher in all the interse progeny than their originals. FG-crosses proved to have better adaptability and BFG crosses had the most disease susceptibility to semi-arid climatic conditions of Rahuri. Mortality rate increased with the increase in exotic inheritance and decreased with the advancement of age. Mortality rate in males was higher than in females. The crossbred calves upto the age of 3 months, particularly during the 1st week after birth, require greater attention and care. Once this critical period is over, the survivability of crossbred calves can be compared with well adopted Zebu-cattle under tropical climate.
