Abstract

A field experiment was conducted during kharif and rabi seasons of 1992–93 and 1993–94 to study the effect of various kharif crops on the growth, yield, and yield attributing character of succeeding wheat. Growing dhaincha (G.M.) and blackgram as preceding crops exerted significant positive effects on the growth and yield attributes of succeeding wheat which ultimately resulted in significantly higher grain yield of wheat than fallow-wheat sequence. However, rice, maize, sorghum (fodder), sesamum and even groundnut as a preceding crop found to decrease the wheat yield to a considerable extent. Application of nitrogen also exerted positive effects on wheat in all the sequences and the crop responded up to 120 kg N ha−1.
