Abstract The primary focus of the JikesRVM (Java Virtual Machine) project was the development of a software platform designed to be a research testbed for the prototyping of new technologies. We focus on the implications of this technological platform by considering Cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) imaging. Focused upon software architecture concepts and frameworks involved rather than coding, Cryo-EM is an important tool to probe nano-bio systems. Main intention is to inspire researchers in this promising R&D field to design and test novel concepts in the dynamic domain of Cryo-EM informatics. Cryo-EM is a form of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), where the sample is studied at cryogenic temperatures (generally liquid nitrogen temperatures).Cryo-EM is gaining popularity in structural biology. Similar image processing techniques based on algorithms could be applied to TEM and SEM as well. Top Keywords Nano-bio systems, Cryo-EM imaging, Algorithms, JikesRVM, Software architecture, TEM, SEM.
