Abstract

Aim: This in vitro study is to compare the tensile bond strength and bond failure site of brackets bonded to fluorotic and nonfluorotic teeth and to compare the etching patterns of the enamel surface of teeth in the fluorosed and nonfluorosed group.

Materials and method: 30 healthy non carious and 60 fluorosed human premolar teeth with TFindex 1–4 which were extracted for orthodontic purpose were collected. These 90 specimens are divided into 3 groups of 30 each: Group I normal teeth with 37%phosphoric acid etch, Group II fluorosed teeth with 37% phosphoric acid etchant Group III fluorosed teeth with 40% phosphoric acid etch and bonded with Transbond-XT. The bond strength of these specimens was tested with the help of a universal testing machine, HOUNSFIELD H10K/06. After deboning, the teeth specimens are sectioned and etched with phosphoric acid according to their groups. These sections were examined in Scanning Electronic Microscope (Fig2) and the images were captured to determine different types of etching patterns.

Results: 1)Etching with 40% phosphoric acid had significant increase on bond strength compared to 37% phosphoric acid etch on fluorosed teeth, 2)Etching with 37% phosphoric acid had superior bond strength on normal teeth compared to fluorosed teeth, 3)All three groups showed all types of etching pattern. Fluorosed teeth produced typical etching pattern unrelated to severity of fluorosis, and 4) All the three groups had an ARI score of 1 & 2 indicating cohesive failure and were not statistically significant.
