Abstract Background A mobile phone (also known as a cellular phone, cell phone, hand phone, or simply a phone) is a phone that can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. It does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. Now a day there will be tremendous use of mobile phone among youth was noticed especially in all college students irrespective of their economic status and causing unnoticed changes in their health. Objectives 1. To study the demographic profile of students in relation to sleep disturbances. 2. To find the social net work usage among the students. 3. To assess the some adverse affects of sleep among students. Materials and Method The present community based cross sectional study was conducted at Alluri Sita Ramaraju Academy of Medical Sciences, Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, during the period from June 2015 to September 2015. A total of 184 individuals were selected randomly from the Alluri Sita Ramaraju Academy of Medical Sciences. Results were analysed and necessary statistical tests were applied. Results Out of 184 individuals, 58 were males and 126 were females.144 (78.2%) students were sleeping < 8 hrs per day. There was statistically significant association was found between inadequate sleep (sleep disturbance) and age, sex and number of calls attending per day (P-0.03, P-0.04 and P-0.03 respectively). Conclusions Based on the above study results, tremendous mobile usage among the college students and it also affecting their regular sleep, concentration of class and time bound completion of their regular academics. But, percentage of passing and getting high marks in the university also noticed among these students. Modification at the earliest means limited use of mobiles will bring good changes in the later period. Adverse events following use of mobile phones will not result instantly and can result in later stage in prolonged users.
