Abstract

Background

Antibiotic treatment is likely to influence colonization with resistant bacteria in two ways. The first is by promoting mutation of bacteria, and the second is by facilitating the persistence of drug-resistant strains that are already present in the normal flora. However, colonization with drug-resistant bacteria may occur independently of antibiotic exposure.

Objectives

1. To study the demographic profile of antibiotic user study population. 2. To find the status of drug prescription in study population. 3. To determine mean per capita income spending on antibiotic purchase.

Materials and Method

The present community based cross sectional study was conducted at rural field practice area of Alluri Sita Ramaraju Academy of Medical Sciences, Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, during the period from June 2015 to September 2015. A total of 206 individuals were selected randomly from the field practice area of Alluri Sita Ramaraju Academy of Medical Sciences. Results were analysed and necessary statistical tests were applied.

Results

Out of 206 study population, 66% were females and 34% were males. In the study population, 68.9% people were using antibiotic for different diseases. Out of 142 antibiotic users, about 85.9% were using oral mode of taking antibiotics. Among the antibiotic users, about 40.8% were spending amount of > Rs.200/month/individual. There was statistically significant association was found between literacy and antibiotic use. (P<0.05).

Conclusions

Based on the above study results, antibiotic user population was more which was 68.9%. About 64.7% people were taking antibiotics from qualified doctor and 11.5% were taking antibiotics on their own at pharmacy shops. Moreover patients themselves prescribing medicine to others who are having similar complaints in the family as well as neighbours and also same antibiotic used for similar condition in their future.
