Abstract Introduction ‘Hospital waste’ is a broader definition and refers to all wastes generated by hospitals, including infectious and non-infectious waste materials, hazardous wastes and chemicals, and other nonhazardous wastes. Hospital is one of the complex institutions which are frequented by people from every walk of life in the society. Objectives: 1 To study the awareness about hospital waste management. 2. To study the correct usage of colour coding bins. 3. To determine the socio-demographic variables in relation to practice of hospital waste management. Materials & Method This is a hospital based cross-sectional study conducted at ASRAM hospital among the nursing staff during the period from November 2015 to December 2015. About 50 nursing staff was interviewed. Importance of the study was explained to the participants and informed consent was taken. Necessary statistical tests were applied. Results 92% of the nursing staff were aware of the definition of the hospital waste. Statistically significant association was found between qualification of nursing staff and awareness about hospital waste (P<0.05). 82% of people were disposing dressing pad correctly. 98% of the nursing staff was having knowledge about accessibility of colour coding bins. Conclusions Of the study population 92% of the nursing staff was aware of the definition of the hospital waste. On the whole hospital waste management in the hospital was good and practice and knowledge levels were observed high among the B. Sc nursing staff comparatively other ANM nursing staff.
