Abstract

Aim

The aim of this study was to determine the quantification of calcium ion concentration of different irrigants used in the root canals by Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AASF).

Materials & Method

Forty maxillary canines were used for this study. Each tooth prepared was irrigated with 1% sodium hypochlorite solution. The samples were distributed into 4 groups (n=10), according to the type of final irrigants used: 15% EDTA, apple cider vinegar, 0.2% chitosan and control group (without final irrigation). The total amount of each solution was further analyzed by AASF for quantification of calcium ions in the solutions. The data obtained was statistically analyzed by one way-ANOVA and Tukey Kramer test.

Results

There was statistically significant difference between 0.2% chitosan and apple cider vinegar (p<0.05) with apple cider vinegar causing more demineralization on root dentin (p>0.05).

Conclusion

Under the experimental conditions, apple cider vinegar was associated with greatest effect on the root dentin demineralization, followed by 0.2% chitosan, 15% EDTA and the control group.
