Abstract

Aim

Dentine sensitivity (DS) or dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) is one of the most commonly encountered clinical problems. It is clinically described as an exaggerated response to application of a stimulus to exposed dentine, regardless of its location. Present study was done with an aim to compare the two different agent used for controlling dentinal hypersensitivity

Material and Method

Present study was conducted in the department dentistry, MB Hospital Udaipur. 165 patients fulfilling all inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in study. Patients were divided into 3 equal groups; group A receives sodium fluoride while group B receives potassium nitrate, while group C served as Placebo group and receives distilled water with thickener. Sensitivity was assessed by means of tactile and evaporative stimuli. Pre-and post-treatment assessment was done at the baseline, 7th day, 15th day, 28th day, 60th day and measurements were recorded by the same investigator. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 15.

Results

When comparing the desensitizing treatments for both groups and with control group it was observed that Statistically significant (p≤0.05) differences were observed in Group A and Group B during Baseline, 7th day, 15th day, 28th day and 60th days after treatment while control group do not exhibit any significant difference.

Conclusion

Potassium Nitrate Group showed rapid decrease in hypersensitivity values from the baseline compared to other groups. Sodium fluoride showed the least performance next to the control group.
