Abstract The present study aimed to assess significance of cognitive functioning on psychotherapeutic outcome of schizophrenic patients. Based on purposive sampling, a total of 8 schizophrenic patients (4- with significant cognitive dysfunction, 4- without cognitive dysfunction) were selected from inpatient wards of Ranchi Institute of Neuro-Psychiatry & Allied Sciences (RINPAS), Ranchi. Cognitive functioning was assessed with PGI Battery of Brain Dysfunction. Baseline assessment of psychosocial functioning was assessed using Disability Assessment Scale. Along with conventional mode of Pharmacotherapy, we provided psychotherapeutic package consisting psychoeducation, supportive psychotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy to both the groups. Completion of psychotherapeutic sessions, Disability Assessment Scale was again administered to both the groups for measuring outcome of psychotherapy. Result revealed that cognitive functioning did not play significant role in psychosocial functioning of the schizophrenic inpatients. After psychotherapeutic intervention, schizophrenia without cognitive dysfunction group attained better psychosocial functioning (personal, social, occupational, physical, & general) in comparison to schizophrenia with cognitive dysfunction group. It is concluded that intact cognitive functioning of schizophrenic patients can be predictors of psychotherapeutic outcome among schizophrenic patients.
