Abstract

Obesity is a complex medical condition with significant physical and psychological dimensions that virtually impacts all ages and socioeconomic groups. It has reached epidemic proportions globally and is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic diseases and disability. Several studies have been conducted to trace the effects of obesity on mental health and well being. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether there exists significant differences between obese and non obese individuals in terms of Personality traits and Body Image. The study was conducted upon three groups, one group comprised of normal weight individuals, a second group comprised of overweight individuals and a third group comprised of obese individuals. The total sample size was 90. The groups comprised of 30 individuals each. Subjects were grouped on the basis of their Body Mass Index (BMI) which was calculated from self reported measures of height and weight. Following this all subjects were administered the NEO-Five Factor Inventory and Body Image Ideals Questionnaire. On the basis of the obtained data, statistical analysis was conducted using One-Way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey's HSD Post Hoc Test. The obtained results showed that there were differences among the groups with respect to Neuroticism, Extraversion and Openness. These findings contribute to some understanding about obesity and the relationship it shares with few of the variables and the impact it has on our lives.
