Abstract

Background

Platelet indices (PIs)-Platecrit, mean platelet volume (MPV),platelet distribution width (PDW) and P-LCR -are a group of platelet parameters obtained as a part of complete blood count using automated hematology analyzers. Evidence suggests that PIs may have diagnostic and prognostic value in febrile thrombocytopenia. This study aims to understand the profile of PIs in dengue fever.

Objectives

To study the role of platelet parameters like platelet count, PDW and MPV and P-LCR in dengue positive infection and also to note their relationship with the severity of the disease

Material and Method

This was an observational study carried out in a tertiary care hospital on all dengue positive cases over a period of six months between May 2018 to October 2018 in the department of Pathology at Santosh Medical College and Hospital Ghaziabad. The platelet parameters of 120 dengue positive patients like platelet count, Mean platelet volume and Platelet distribution widths were noted using Sysmex XN 350 automated hematology analyser and were compared with the severity of the disease which included DF/DHF and DSS

Results

Platelet parameters like platelet count,MPV,PDW and P-LCR were studied with the clinical severity of the disease(DF/DHF/DSS) in dengue positive cases. Significant difference was observed between severity of thrombocytopenia and severity of disease. Cases of DHF were associated with low MPV in 83.3% cases and a high PDW and a high P-LCR in 87.5% and 75% cases respectively.

Conclusion

Platelet indices are useful parameters in dengue infection. Platelet indices like MPV, PDW and P-LCR are useful l to monitor dengue infection
