Abstract

Background

The fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an OPD procedure which is easy to perform, reproducible, cheap but accurate. Fine needle aspiration is a part of triple test which is used to diagnose any breast lump. However a definitive conclusion should always be based on histopathological examination.

Aim

The aim of our study is to correlate the cytological diagnosis with histopathological diagnosis, in order to know the clinicomorphologic spectrum of breast lump, and also to figure out sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and efficacy of FNAC.

Method

Total 77 cases were taken into account for the study, subjected to FNAC, after which the subsequent biopsy of each case was taken into consideration for analysis, for a period of 1 year from January 2017 to December 2017, in Tertiary Care Centre, Jamnagar.

Results

In our study, amongst the 77 cases, 2 were male (2.60%) and 75 were female (97.40%). According to our study, maximum cases of breast lump were found to occur in the age group of 30–40 years. Out of total of 77, 27 cases (63.11%) were benign, 23(20.49%) malignant, 16 (3.27%) being suspicious for malignancy and the remaining 11(13.11%) were found to be other non neoplastic lesions. Of the total 77 cases, 72 were consistent on histopathology whereas 5 were found to be inconsistent. According to this data, the sensitivity of our study appears to be 95.83%, specificity 96.22%, positive predictive value 92%, negative predictive value 98.07%, and efficacy 93.50%.

Conclusion

Having high sensitivity and specificity, FNAC helps the treating surgeon to plan an accurate management of lump. At the same time, it is important to correlate the FNAC results with clinical findings and other radiological investigations. Inconclusive results should always be confirmed with biopsy
