Abstract Present study was carried out in 207 patients of ascites at Rama Medical College, Hospital and Research Center [RMCHRH], Ghaziabad, India, during the period of July 2010 to June 2012.Amongs the patients of ascites, majority of case were due to abdominal tuberculosis. Of the 207 patients, 180 [87%] were diagnosed as tubercular ascites on the basis of cytological examination of the centrifuge specimen of ascetic fluid received. The study correlated with clinical diagnosis. Sensitivity was 91.6%. The present study advocated the efficiency of cytological examination of ascetic fluid in patients of ascites in low socio-economic population of rural and sub urban national capital region.
