Study of Exfoliative Cytology of Ascetic Fluid & Evaluation of its Role in the Diagnosis of Abdominal Tuberculosis in Rural Population of National Capital Region

Abstract

Present study was carried out in 207 patients of ascites at Rama Medical College, Hospital and Research Center [RMCHRH], Ghaziabad, India, during the period of July 2010 to June 2012.Amongs the patients of ascites, majority of case were due to abdominal tuberculosis. Of the 207 patients, 180 [87%] were diagnosed as tubercular ascites on the basis of cytological examination of the centrifuge specimen of ascetic fluid received. The study correlated with clinical diagnosis. Sensitivity was 91.6%.

The present study advocated the efficiency of cytological examination of ascetic fluid in patients of ascites in low socio-economic population of rural and sub urban national capital region.
