Response of synthetic insecticides to field strains of green peach aphid, Myzus Persicae Sulzer

Abstract

Bioefficacy potential of proprietary formulations of five insecticides viz., imidacloprid, acetamiprid, clothianidin, dimethoate and fipronil was worked out against field collected population of green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer under laboratory conditions by direct spray and leaf dip method. Clothianidine was found to be the most effective while, dimethoate was the least toxic by direct spray and leaf dip method. Relative toxicity of clothianidin and acetamiprid was at par with each other and 15 times more than that of dimethoate when applied directly. Clothianidin was found to be more effective with relative toxicity value being 10.62 than acetamiprid (6.00) when tested on residual film of treated leaves. The LC50 values of clothianidin, acetamiprid, imidacloprid, fipronil and dimethoate were 0.0011, 0.0011, 0.0022, 0.0124 and 0.0165% when insecticides were directly spray. The corresponding LC50 values were 0.0013, 0.0023, 0.0039, 0.0107 and 0.0138% when exposed to residual film of treated leaves. On the basis of LC50 values by taking the LC50 value of dimethoate as unity, the order of toxicity was clothianidin > acetamiprid > imidacloprid > fipronil > dimethoate. The results reveal the significant potential of neonicotinoids as an alternative to conventional synthetic insecticides for the management of aphid pests.
