Abstract

Saturated hydrocarbons (SHC) of two popular rice varieties viz., CO 43 and BPT 5204 damaged by the rice yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) was identified through Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and compared with healthy plants. The hydrocarbon profile revealed a wide variation between healthy and damaged plants. In the variety CO 43, totally 16 compounds were identified in healthy plants whereas damaged plants contained 20 compounds and in the variety BPT 5204, healthy plants had 17 compounds whereas damaged plants contained 13 compounds. These differences might be related to the quality of plants, which is important for the attraction of natural enemies in the rice ecosystem.
