Abstract A survey was carried out in 30 Japanese quail farms in 22 districts of Tamil Nadu State, to analyze the economics of Japanese quail farming. Total cost of production per Japanese quail was lowest in large farms (>4000 birds), compared to small (< 2000 birds) and medium sized farms (2000–4000 birds). Average gross returns realized per Japanese quail was found to be highest in the medium farms. The Net profit per Japanese quail and Benefit cost Ratio was proportionately higher with increasing size of the farm. Thus the net profit () per Japanese quail of 0.68, 2.02 and 3.11, whereas the benefit: cost ratio of 1.02, 1.07 and 1.12 for small, medium and large Japanese quail farms, respectively. The producer had to maintain a minimum stock of 973, 1992 and 5975 Japanese quail birds in small, medium and large farms, respectively. The study recommends new entrepreneurs to opt for large-scale integrated production model coupled with marketing in own chain of retail outlets as value added products for higher returns.
