Abstract

Two-ply yarn is a value added product derived from coir fibre, extracted from coconut husk and used as a raw material for rope making, mat making and geo-textiles. The profitability of coir two-ply yarn units have been examined using primary data collected from 30 sample coir two-ply yarn producers. For every rupee of investment in coir pith processing, about Rs 1.28 obtained as returns, indicating its profitability. The major constraints faced by two-ply yarn firms were inadequate availability of skilled labour and irregular presence of labour followed by limited hours of electricity and less price realization. The study has clearly brought out that urgency of developing innovative technologies for spinning to reduce the dependence on skilled labour.
