The study made an attempt to explore the socio-economic profile of dairy farmers and to analyze the input output relationship of milk production in both plain and hill regions of Uttarakhand state. Cobb Douglas Production function analysis was employed to estimate the resource productivity and resource use efficiency in milk production. Irrespective of species and regions, the milk production function estimated was a good fit and included explanatory variables explained a large proportion of variation in milk production. By and large, green and dry fodder and concentrate feed had positive and significant influence on milk production across species and regions, reflecting growing importance of these inputs in milk production enhancement. Labour as input had mixed influence on milk production and general observation in the region was that the input must have been over used for obvious reasons. Enhancing genetic improvement leads to increase the animal productivity. Dairy farmers can be reduced the cost of milk production by feeding a balanced ration.
