Abstract

In Punjab, rice is a cash crop commercially cultivated primarily for sale. The recorded paddy yield in the Ludhiana district was 31.67 q per acre, which farmers sold at a market price of 1450 per q in 2015-16. The gross return per acre was found to be 45921.5. The recorded paddy yield in the Patiala district was 27.08 q per acre, and gross return per acre was found to be 39266. The return over total cost was also higher in the Ludhiana district due to the higher yield. Output-input ratio in Ludhiana and Patiala districts were 1.23 and 1.13, respectively. It indicated that farmers in the Ludhiana district were more efficient in using their inputs than in the Patiala district. The total variable and fixed costs in Punjab were estimated at 16472.5 and 19677.5, respectively. The average yield of paddy crop per acre was estimated to be 29.38 q, and the average gross return was estimated to be 42601 per acre. The return was high in the case of paddy crops as compared to other Kharif crops in Punjab.
