Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine the rural transformation in rural Punjab and India. Both Kerala and Punjab experienced top positions in rural transformation in an economic context. Nevertheless, Kerala remained at the top while Punjab witnessed an intermediate position among other states in the socio-economic context. Amritsar and Bathinda recorded a high level but Hoshiarpur's low level of rural transformation in a socio-economic context. The analysis revealed a disparity between backward and developed regions at the state and district levels that led to socio-economic inequality in the region. Hence, the rural non-farm sector is a viable option for inclusive growth.
