Abstract

The present study is an attempt to evaluate and analyze the constraints faced by the inland fishers along with the possible solutions to overcome these constraints. The study was conducted in district Bandipora of Kashmir valley. Research design used for conducting this study was Ex-post facto. A list of licensed fishers was procured from the department of fisheries and it was found that the population consisted of around 2080 licensed fishers in the district. A sample of 208 fishers was selected using stratified random sampling for the study that constituted around 10% of the population. 50% of the fishers selected were male and 50% were females. The study revealed that the fishers faced constraints in their personal as well in professional life that pushed them towards backwardness. Poor housing, road connectivity, transport, lack of technological interventions, institutional credit, market and marketing channels were some of the major constraints faced by the fishers. Despite being the major fish producing district in the valley the fishers are caught in the vicious cycle of poverty and ignorance due to the huge number of constraints faced by them. Government apathy towards solving and overcoming these constraints was responsible mainly for the poor growth and development of fishers.
