Abstract The present prospective study aims to establish the epidemiological profile of strangulation deaths in homicides which were subjected to post-mortem examination in a tertiary care teaching hospital in South India for a period of two years (June 2010 to May 2012). The study revealed that among 211 homicides conducted in the study period, strangulation accounted for 59 cases (27.96%). It was common in age group 21–30 years and females. Deaths were common in individuals who were married. Urban dwellers and low socio-economic status were commonly involved. Illiterates and home makers were common victims.
