Evaluation of Variability in Morphological Traits of Wayanad Turmeric (Curcuma Longa L) Genotypes

Abstract

Local genotypes of turmeric (Curcuma longa L) collected from three Taluks of Wayanad district, Kerala were evaluated for variability in morphological traits along with the check variety, Kanthi. Analysis of variance showed wide variability among the collected accessions. Fresh rhizome yield per plant was the highest in genotypes WCL 24 (350.53 g/plant) and WCL 23 (349.08 g/plant). The number of tillers was high in the genotype WCL 22 (2.63) followed by WCL 21 (2.30), WCL 23 (2.20), WCL5 (2.20) and WCL 26 (2.13). The length of primary rhizomes was high in variety Kanthi (11.28 cm), WCL 23 (10.84 cm), and WCL 24 (10.70 cm) and the width of primary rhizomes was the highest in WCL 25 (2.86 cm). The genotypic coefficient of variation ranged from 2.29 per cent for number of leaves to 32.03 per cent for fresh rhizome yield per plant. The phenotypic coefficient of variation ranged from 7.71 per cent for leaf width to 49.18 per cent for number of tillers. High genetic advance was observed for the traits number of tillers, length and width of primary rhizomes and fresh yield per plant. The variability between different Wayanad accessions implies the scope of utilizing these genotypes for crop improvement programmes based on consistent yield and biochemical characters.
