Prevalence of health-related disability of urban and rural elderly people in Patna

Abstract

In the present study, an attempt was made to investigate the nutritional status of300 elderly people (172 male and 128 female), age group of 60 years and above, residing in rural areas (N=150) and urban areas (N=150) from the Patna district (Bihar). Data on anthropometric measurements including weight and height were recorded using standard equipment and techniques. Information related to subjects was collected using an interview schedule. The study reveals that the percentage of malnutrition was higher in rural in comparison to the urban area but malnutrition was more pronounced in women than men. When the data were compared with the normal blood pressure, it was found that systolic data was higher and diastolic was lower than the normal blood pressure. It was found that more than half of the elderly men and women reported various physical ailments. The incidence ofvarious health problems was less among urban elderly women as compared to rural women.
