Abstract The objective of this study was to explore the challenges experienced by the caregivers(N=91) in rural Assam, female and male caregivers. The respondents were interviewed with the help of a semi-structured interview schedule. The caregivers’ responses were classified into two categories, that is, males and females. Under the male category, married and unmarried sons, elderly male spouses were the caregivers. The female category constitutes the daughter-in-law, elderly women, married and unmarried daughters. Thematic interpretation of the narratives of the respondents showed a significant difference in the experiences and challenges faced by male and female care providers to their elderly relatives.
