Abstract

The Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) came into force with the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) on January 1, 1995. The preamble to the Agreement recognizes that the agreed long-term objective of the reform process initiated by the Uruguay Round is to establish a fair and market-oriented agricultural trading system. In this paper we aim to study the performance of India's agricultural exports and also try to assess the competitiveness of top agricultureproduct-exports of India under WTO regime. We have also been discussed the developments in agricultural trade especially the agricultural exports at the world level in the recent years and the performance of Indian agriculture in this respect. The objective is to compare export performance under WTO regime with pre-WTO period. An attempt has been made to spell out the ingredients of a strategy to augment agricultural exports in the changing and more demanding global economy.
