Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the effects of socio-economic conditions on the identity style of adolescents. In all, 500 randomly selected male and female adolescents constituted the sample. Their age ranged from 16 to 18 years. They were administered the SES Scale (Pandey & Singh, 1997) and Identity Style Scale (Berzonsky, 1986) and were divided into low, middle and high SES groups. The descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. It was found that the three SES groups of adolescents differed significantly on the dimensions of diffused/avoidant orientation and commitment, but not on the dimensions of information orientation and normative orientation. The results are thoroughly discussed and limitation and suggestions for future researches are also offered.
