Abstract

Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system directs to self-guided study, instructional materials being its prime instrument. These are called Self Instructional Materials (SIMs). This is also factual for the LIS distance education. SIM has its certain characteristics which make it different from other learning contents. Preparing SIMs needs special attention of instruction designers, who work on the basis of the theories of instructional design (ID). In this article, first a review of some well-cited ID theories and models has been done; and then, based on the prescriptions and features of those theories and models, an attempt to evaluate the existing guidelines for developing SIMs for LIS distance education has been made.
