Effects of Physical Exercises on Cognition and Well-Being of Prisoners: A Review

Abstract

Various studies have reported the effect of personality on crimes committed. These are also associated with the type of crime committed. A general notion is that – isolation of prisoners and several custodial measures would reform law offenders. Physical activity has been seen to improve the quality of life and reduce psychological symptoms in healthy people and with those having mental illnesses. This article’s objective is to review the effects of exercise on various psychological traits affecting personality. Data was collected from various databases on the effect of exercise on neuropsychological traits that affect the personality. Studies selected were based on interventions & RCTs. 30 out of 40 articles on were reviewed on yoga (including physical yoga), exercise programs, exercise counselling. Reviewed articles suggest that total mood disturbance was significantly improved by practicing exercises & yoga. It provides psychosocial well-being and prevents psychological problems. In criminals it was reported to statistically improve (p = 0.001) & maintain physical health & emotional health. It was easy to administer and post trail criminals has sober behaviour & lesser criminal attitude. Various forms of yoga’s like Art of living & vipassana in prison, along with transcendental meditation have been shown to provide positive outcome replicating prior findings. It reduced anxiety, hostility, neurotism, insomnia and behavioural infraction in prisoners. Physical exercise improved overall well-being, psychological problems like schizophrenia, anxiety, insomnia, attitude and criminal behaviour in criminals.
