Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of static stretching and dynamic stretching on explosive strength of legs. Two groups were divided for study i.e., stalic stretching (n = 10) and a dynamic stretching group (n = 10). Twenty healthy college male students (mean +/-standard deviation; age, 22. 8 +/-0.8 yrs, height, 173.3 +/-1.1 cm; weight, 65.9 +/-3.0 kg). Subjects then performed static stretching and dynamic stretching in a randomized orde1; and explosive strength of leg was measured before and after each of these trials. The target muscles of both static stretching and dynamic stretching were five muscle groups in both lower limbs, i.e. plantar flexors, hip extensors, hamstrings, hip flexors and quadriceps. The static stretching were for 20 second of five target muscles and for dynamic stretching each subject contracted the antagonist of target muscle intentionally in standing upright position and flexed or extended some joints once in eve1Y 2 seconds so that the target muscles were stretched. Independent-t test was applied to compare the initial level of both the groups that they were significantly different or not and paired-t test was lIsed to see the effect after static stretching and dynamic stretching on explosive strength of leg and independent t-test was used to compare the final test of both groups (i.e., static stretching and dynamic stretching). The level of significance was set at 0.05. It was concluded that after static stretching no significant effect on explosive strength afleg whereas in dynamic stretching the explosive strength of leg was improved significantly.
