Online published on 21 February, 2019. Abstract A large number of populations is affected by the Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) condition, thus changing the manner in which they live and this presents us with the challenge of studying the condition. We aim to determine whether IBS patients have a higher risk of osteoporosis and its related fractures than those without the syndrome through the use of the National Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) database. We utilized data from the National Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) database and random sampling method was employed to select patients diagnosed with IBS and controls without IBS. We found out that osteoporosis diagnosis was identified in 23, 287 patients and concurrent fracture diagnoses in 3, 093 cases. IBS patients have a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures associated with the condition. The identified high number of IBS patients diagnosed with osteoporosis and related fractures showed that IBS increases the risk of having the disease and experiencing such fractures.
