Prevalence of Lower Back Pain among Health Care Providers Working in Operation Rooms in Mosul City Hospitals

Abstract

Background

The pain in the lower back is one of the most common health problems in the operating rooms in our hospitals due to the specificity of these places due to the limitation of movement and length period of standing on the feet and increase the number of operations per day and not taking enough rest or lack of breaks for rest with presence of risk factors may lead to exacerbate the problem of health workers.

Aim

This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors for lower back pain amongst health care providers who are working in operation rooms at Mosul city hospitals including nurses, surgeon, and anesthetist.

Material and method

Descriptive study design was carried out in order to achieve the objectives of the present study. Constructed questionnaire was dependent for this study includes demographical data, nature of pain and some attributes of pain. Data were collected during two months from the 30th of December 2017 to 1st of March 2018. The study subjects consist of (157) persons who were working inside operation rooms in four hospitals Al-Salam, AL-Jumhory, Alkanssa, and Ibn-Sena Teaching Hospitals.

Results

Most respondents (80.9%) had experienced lower back pain, and there wassignificant relationship between age and lower back pain, also there was significant relationship between tenure and lower back pain.

Conclusion

Lower back pain is a terrible problem inside operation rooms, and suffering from occurrence of lower back pain was increased with advanced age and with long period of years working inside operation rooms.

Recommendation

Some steps should be following to reduce lower back pain such as scheduling rest periods, and development of educational programs which enhance the ideal or proper use of body mechanics when lifting and transferring of patients and heavy objects.
