Online published on 6 April, 2019. Abstract Since the advent of the Ecological plaque hypothesis of caries etiology, concepts in the prevention and control of caries have changed drastically. These contemporary approaches aim at modifying the existing biofilm and neutralize the environmental factors that may predispose to the creation of disease. This review discusses the need for such approaches in the long-term prevention of caries and also provides a bird's-eye view to the clinician on the various strategies available for the same.
