Abstract Objective To determine the frequency of cesarean section and analyze the indications, so as to introduce measures to control the cesarean section rate as decreasing this rate will lessen the maternal morbidity and mortality Patients and Method This cross sectional study was conducted in Karbala Gyn & Obst Teaching Hospital from 1st of august 2018 to 31st of December 2018, it is a tertiary hospital in the province. In this study information and data were taken from all the patients underwent cesarean section. Calculation of the total no of deliveries was done and the rate of cesarean section was devaluated with the indications of them. Results The total number of women have been delivered over the study period was 9414, out of which caesarean sections (CS) were 2471. The prevalence of caesarean section in the study population was 26.2%. The most common indication of caesarean section was previous caesarean section (67.7%), followed by Fetal distress (8.29%), failure of progress in labour (6.43%) and breech presentation (5.66%). Conclusion The rising prevalence of caesarean section was mainly due to previous caesarean section followed by Fetal distress, also we did our study in tertiary hospital this means that most of the risky cases will be admitted to it so the rate is 26.2%.
