Leptospirosis in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli, India

Abstract

Objectives

To understand the clinical spectrum, laboratory parameters and risk factors associated with Leptospirosis, a study was conducted in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli during January 2011 to December 2015.

Method

The cases of Leptospirosis were diagnosed serologically at Shri Vinoba Bhave Civil Hospital, Silvassa during the last 5 years. Its clinical history, clinical presentation, laboratory parameters and ecoepidemiology data were recorded.

Result

The incidence of Leptospirosis in per lakh population were encountered as 7.4 in 2011, 11.7 in 2012, 16.0 in 2013, 6.3 in 2014 and 2.6 in 2015 diagnosed by IgM ELISA. The disease showed its peak during the rainy season (July to November). The males (77.8%) were recorded out numbered on the females (22.2%). Infestation of dwellings with rat (56.1%), working in field (68.3%), dwelling wet surroundings, streams nearby, dirty surroundings (78.0%) and contact with animals (74.3%) were observed as epidemiological risk factors. The patients were presented with the complaints of intermediate fever 56.4%, Jaundice 55.3%, thrombocytopenia 88.6% and deranged liver function 85%.

Conclusion

The present investigation has given a light on the factors responsible for the transmission of disease, clinical features and laboratory parameters That helps to develop the effective strategies for the prevention and control of Leptospirosis in the UT of Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
