Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between health-promoting lifestyle and the psychological well-being of obese middle-aged people. The subjects of this study were 200 obese middle-aged people between the ages of 40 and 65 living in Gyeonggi province who were sampled using a random sampling method. Data collected for this study was processed using the statistical program SPSS 21.0 to perform descriptive statistical analysis, factor analysis, and reliability analysis. First, sub-factors of a healthpromoting lifestyle, such as self-acceptance, environmental dominance, positive interpersonal relationship, autonomy, life purpose, and personal growth were positively correlated with all sub-factors of psychological well-being, including self-realization, health responsibility, exercise & nutrition, interpersonal support, and stress management. Second, it was found that positive interpersonal relationships and autonomy have positive effects on self-realization and exercise & nutrition. Third, results showed that autonomy has a positive effect on health responsibility. Fourth, it was found that personal growth has a positive effect on interpersonal support. Fifth, results indicated that self-acceptance and positive interpersonal relationships have positive effects on stress management. In order to help obese middle-aged people lead healthy lives, it is suggested that concrete and practical educational programs that will strengthen health-promoting lifestyle through health management and effective control of life habits be developed, implemented, and evaluated.
