Abstract

Employment is an essential ingredient in the fight against poverty and in achieving growth with equity. For the first time in India, citizens are guaranteed employment by the government. Under the terms of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), passed by the Government of India in August 2005, each rural Indian household is now entitled by law to 100 days of unskilled work per year on public works programmes. This study is an attempt to evaluate the performance of the MGNREGS in general and to women in particular. For the purpose of the study, a survey has been conducted with the help of an interview schedule among 250 women employees to know the impact of the scheme on the livelihood of the people. It covers the problems of work place, stress they encounter, the benefits enjoyed, their expectation from the work and tries to bring out the factors determining the earning capacity of women work force. The collected date were analysed with suitable statistical tools like Garrett ranking, correlation analysis, factor analysis and chi square test. The study reveals the fact that despite the minor hurdles they face in employment, the benefits they derive is of much help in uplifting the livelihood of the rural women.
