Experience of burden among the caregivers of people with severe mental illness: effects on general well-being, appreciation and perceived severity

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to understand the burden of the caregivers of people with mental illness across different demographic conditions. Thirty patients with schizophrenia and 30 with bipolar affective disorder with their caregivers participated in this study. Results suggested that caregivers of schizophrenic‘s experience of burden were affected by gender, marital status, being parent or spouse. Gender, occupational status, and income status did influence the experience of burden of caregivers of schizophrenic patients.
