ABSTRACT

It is most likely that neurocognitive functioning may have multifarious and indirect pathways that lead to obesity in adolescents. Although a widely accepted pattern has emerged between neurocognitive functioning and obesity from existing proof, less is known about exactly how and why they are associated. The present study consisted of total 60 adolescents, in which 30 obese adolescents between the age ranges of 13 -19 years having BMI of 26 or above. The adolescent population involved in this study was from the Department of Clinical Nutrition, Sri Ramachandra University who was matched with normal weight adolescents control group of 30 adolescents of BMI of less than 25. The Neuropsychological Assessment Battery employed in this study was standardized ones for obesity. It was evident from the results that the obese group reported having more cognitive deficit, executive dysfunction and health related adjustment issues than the non-obese. The eating behavior showed significant factors associated with depression and this can be contributed to the fact that the adolescent life stage is one essential emotional factors and obesity adds to the explained factor. These results further emphasize the need to implement an early intervention in children/adolescents who are at the risk for overweight and obesity.
