FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO SUICIDAL ATTEMPTS AMONG MALE AND FEMALE SUICIDAL ATTEMPTERS IN MANDYA DISTRICT

ABSTRACT:

Today suicidal attempts in the society posing major threat to the interpersonal and intrapersonal relations among human beings. It is becoming one of major challenges to psychologists and psychiatrists to manage the ideas of suicide and suicidal attempts. In the present study an attempt is made to find out the factors contributing suicidal attempts among male and female suicidal attempters in Mandya district. A total of 665 suicidal attempts were analyzed in a tertiary hospital in Mandya city, of which 318 were male and remaining 347 were female suicidal attempters. They were interviewed through a semi-structured questionnaire mainly focusing on the major factor/reasons lead to the suicidal attempts. The data were analyzed through chi-square tests and Cramer’s V tests. Results revealed that that disharmony in the family ranked number one as a major contributor for attempting suicide to an extent of 67.7%, followed by other reasons like financial burden, health issues, work place harassment, property conflicts, conflicts with neighbours etc., to the extent of 55.9% which ranked second, loss of interest in life contributed to the suicidal attempts ranked third (17.4%), love failure or disappointment ranked 4th(6.8%), unemployment as a factor ranked 5th(5.3%), and examination failure ranked as 6th major contributing factor for committing suicide attempts (0.30%). Further, gender-wise comparisons revealed that male attempters were on higher side when factors like unemployment, love failure, and loss of interest in life, whereas female attempters dominated in the factors like disharmony in the family and other factors.
