Abstract

Knowledge, attitude, and practices of HIV/AIDS prevention are essential in order to prevent and spreading the disease. Prevention is of great importance to combating the spread of HIV/AIDS globally, where multi-layered social, political and economic efforts are needed to reduce the HIV risk. The present study is an attempt of to analyze the knowledge, awareness and behavioral attitude towards HIV/AIDS among street venders. A street vendor is a person who offers goods or services for sale to the public without having a permanently built structure but with a temporary static structure or mobile stall (or head-load). Street vendors provide easy access to a wide range of goods and services in the public spaces of cities around the world: from fresh fruits and vegetables to building materials; garments and crafts to consumer electronics; prepared food to auto parts and repairs. They are mostly migrant, illiterate or moralized segment of the society as well as having limited access to information regarding HIV/AIDS. The study is based on exploratory research design and contains 50 sample sizes randomly selected from surrounding area of sector 17 and 22 markets, Chandigarh. A study included semi-structured interview schedule, based on interview and observation method. The results showed that most of the venders were between the age group between 29–30 age groups. 84.6% venders were heard about the word of “HIV/AIDS”. Further, they have little knowledge about the issue of HIV/AIDS infection.
