Abstract The importance of the quality of teachers cannot be overemphasized because the strength and success of an educational system depends on them whether they teach in schools, colleges or universities. The quality of a nation depends on the quality of its citizens and in turn the qualities of the citizens depend on the quality of their education. The quality of their education reflects, more than any other single factor, the quality of their teachers. A teacher's personal qualities educational qualifications, his professional training, his managerial skills and the place he occupies in the college and in the community contribute to the quality of his teaching. The education of a teacher is not complete on receiving a degree or diploma from a college or university. Pre-service education or joining a college or university is only the first stage in the continuous growth of a teacher in his profession. In the words of Rabindranath Tagore, “A teacher can never truly teach unless he is still learning himself’. A lamp can never light another lamp unless it continuous to burn its own flame”. Top | |
