Abstract

To assess the effect of nano-zinc (ZnONPs) on the performance of goats, 18 male Black Bengal kids (2 to 3 months old, 6.34±0.13 kg body weight) were equally divided into 3 groups. Kids of T1 (control) group were offered basal diet (concentrate mixture and paddy straw) while kids in T2 and T3 group were fed basal diet with 25 and 50 ppm of nano-Zn, respectively for 90 days. Fortnightly body weights and daily feed intakes were recorded. Blood was collected after 90 days of feeding to assess the blood metabolites, serum Zn and antioxidants concentration. The results revealed significant (P<0.05) increase in average daily gain in T2 and T3 groups (48.00±5.28 and 47.01±3.80 g) compared to control (34.44±4.25 g). Concentration of glucose (mg/dl) was significantly (P<0.01) higher (52.20±1.20 and 58.80±1.92) in T2 and T3 than control (43.60±1.80). Serum Zn concentrations (ppm) were significantly (P<0.05) higher (0.77±0.22 and 0.95±0.16) in T2 and T3 than control (0.35±0.15). Erythrocyte catalase (U/mg Hb) and superoxide dismutase (U/mg of Hb) activity were significantly (P<0.05) higher (2.20±0.05, 2.38±0.03 and 32.70±0.55, 38.00±0.53) and lipid peroxidation values (μmol MDA formed / mg Hb) were significantly (P<0.05) lower (2.10±0.08 and 2.00±0.10) in T2 and T3 than control animals. It may be concluded that supplementation of 25 ppm of nano-Zn improved the growth, antioxidant status and serum Zn concentration of Black Bengal goats.
