Abstract

The study was conducted on 18 cervixes collected from healthy Barbari goats slaughtered at slaughterhouse, Mathura with the objective to record sequential gross and histological changes in the cervix during pregnancy. These cervixes were divided into three groups as early (Gr I: 0 to 50 days), mid (Gr II: 51 to 100 days) and late (Gr III: 101 days to full term) pregnancy period (n=6 each). Grossly, the maximum increase in length, diameter and thickness of cervix was observed in the last trimester of pregnancy. Histologically, cervix was composed of mucous membrane, which was comprised of epithelium and lamina propria, fibro-muscular layer and outermost serosa layer. The mucous membrane was highly folded and consisted of primary, secondary and tertiary folds. From 24 to 46 days of pregnancy, the surface epithelium eroded from maximum places but remained intact at few places and lined by stratified columnar epithelium. From 47 days of pregnancy, continuous epithelial layer was noticed. The epithelium was either simple columnar or pseudostratified columnar type. At 134 days, the surface epithelium was mostly simple columnar. With the advancement of pregnancy, there was an increase in the epithelial height. The lamina propria consisted of densely arranged collagen fibres and little reticular and elastic fibres with connective tissue cells. Hypertrophy and hyperplasia were observed in the cervix with advancement of the pregnancy. In conclusion, the study will be helpful in identification of normal structure of cervix during different stage of pregnancy in Barbari goats.
